The Place of Piety
The practice of religious disciplines is not a scheme for saving oneself through strict adherence to a code of ritual abstinence and cleanliness. Sin is not the source of the impurity of our hearts. The impurity of our heart is the source of our sin. The goal of spiritual discipline is not avoiding impurity, or resisting temptation through personal strength. Spiritual disciplines, like prayer, studying scripture, abstinence, and fasting are about pursuing and consuming that which draws us closer to Christ who purifies the heart.
